    The Bar Pattern Speed of NGC 1433 Estimated Via Sticky-Particle Simulations

    We present detailed numerical simulations of NGC 1433, an intermediate-type barred spiral showing strong morphological features including a secondary bar, nuclear ring, inner ring, outer pseudoring, and two striking, detached spiral arcs known as ``plumes.'' This galaxy is an ideal candidate for recreating the observed morphology through dynamical models and determining the pattern speed. We derived a gravitational potential from an HH-band image of the galaxy and simulated the behavior of a two-dimensional disk of 100,000 inelastically colliding gas particles. We find that the closest matching morphology between a BB-band image and a simulation occurs with a pattern speed of 0.89 km s−1^{-1} arcsec−1^{-1} ±\pm 5-10%. We also determine that the ratio of corotation radius to the average published bar radius is 1.7 ±\pm 0.3, with the ambiguity in the bar radius being the largest contributor to the error.Comment: Accepted for publication by The Astronomical Journal. 34 pages, 13 figures, 2 table

    Dynamical Simulations of NGC 2523 and NGC 4245

    We present dynamical simulations of NGC 2523 and NGC 4245, two barred galaxies (types SB(r)b and SB(r)0/a, respectively) with prominent inner rings. Our goal is to estimate the bar pattern speeds in these galaxies by matching a sticky-particle simulation to the BB-band morphology, using near-infrared KsK_s-band images to define the gravitational potentials. We compare the pattern speeds derived by this method with those derived in our previous paper using the well-known Tremaine-Weinberg continuity equation method. The inner rings in these galaxies, which are likely to be resonance features, help to constrain the dynamical models.     Ice Age Epochs and the Sun's Path Through the Galaxy

    We present a calculation of the Sun's motion through the Milky Way Galaxy over the last 500 million years. The integration is based upon estimates of the Sun's current position and speed from measurements with Hipparcos and upon a realistic model for the Galactic gravitational potential. We estimate the times of the Sun's past spiral arm crossings for a range in assumed values of the spiral pattern angular speed. We find that for a difference between the mean solar and pattern speed of Omega_Sun - Omega_p = 11.9 +/- 0.7 km/s/kpc the Sun has traversed four spiral arms at times that appear to correspond well with long duration cold periods on Earth. This supports the idea that extended exposure to the higher cosmic ray flux associated with spiral arms can lead to increased cloud cover and long ice age epochs on Earth.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Occupational injuries and diseases among commercial fishers in Finland 1996–2015

    Background: Commercial fishing is recognised as one of the most hazardous professions worldwide. In Finland, commercial fishing has some special characteristics, including fishing on ice during frozen waters, and pluriactivity of the fisher family to gain additional income. The goal of this study was to describe injury characteristics among commercial fishers in Finland during the years 1996–2015. With this information, we wish to promote creation of effective safety campaigns and interventions. Materials and methods: The data for this study was acquired from The Farmers’ Social Insurance Institution, who handles the mandatory pension and occupational injury insurance of Finnish commercial fishers. Descriptive statistics was used to categorise and analyse the data that comprised the anonymized insurance history of 1954 insured fishers and reports on 1135 compensated injuries, 11 fatalities, and 53 occupational disease cases. Results: The results show, that the injury rate of Finnish commercial fishers is high. Forty per cent of the fishing-related injuries occur aboard or when entering or leaving the vessel, while 37% happened ashore, and 11% on sea or lake ice. The most common type of incident is preceded by a slip, trip, or sway followed by a fall to lower level. The injuries result in a median disability length of 21 days. An elevated risk for Finnish (vs. Swedish) speaking, as well as for male fishers was found. The occupational diseases of the studied population were for the most part results of manual, repetitive and/or physically straining work due to e.g. hauling in fishing equipment. Due to small numbers and lack of case data, it is not possible to make any further analysis of the 11 fatalities, which were all drownings. Conclusions: Based on our findings, injury prevention should be targeted, besides preventing fatalities because of drowning, at mitigating the risks for slips, trips, and falls both aboard and ashore

    Model-based pattern speed estimates for 38 barred galaxies

    We have modelled 38 barred galaxies by using near-IR and optical data from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey. We constructed the gravitational potentials of the galaxies from HH-band photometry, assuming constant mass-to-light ratio. The halo component we chose corresponds to the so called universal rotation curve. In each case, we used the response of gaseous and stellar particle disc to rigidly rotating potential to determine the pattern speed. We find that the pattern speed of the bar depends roughly on the morphological type. The average value of corotation resonance radius to bar radius, R\mathcal{R}, increases from 1.15±0.251.15 \pm 0.25 in types SB0/a -- SBab to 1.44±0.291.44 \pm 0.29 in SBb and 1.82±0.631.82\pm 0.63 in SBbc -- SBc. Within the error estimates for the pattern speed and bar radius, all galaxies of type SBab or earlier have a fast bar (R≤1.4\mathcal{R} \le 1.4), whereas the bars in later type galaxies include both fast and slow rotators. Of 16 later type galaxies with a nominal value of R>1.4\mathcal{R} > 1.4, there are five cases, where the fast rotating bar is ruled out by the adopted error estimates. We also study the correlation between the parameter R\mathcal{R} and other galactic properties. The clearest correlation is with the bar size: the slowest bars are also the shortest bars when compared to the galaxy size. A weaker correlation is seen with bar strength in a sense that slow bars tend to be weaker. These correlations leave room for a possibility that the determined pattern speed in many galaxies corresponds actually that of the spiral, which rotates more slowly than the bar.     The potential of Landsat time series to characterize historical dynamic and monitor future disturbances in human-modified rainforests of Indonesia

    In this study we demonstrated for the first time the potential of using full time series from high spatial resolution (30 m) Landsat satellites, covering a period from 1987-2017, for characterizing historical dynamics in Indonesian humid tropical rainforests. Our special focus was on mapping forest disturbance and post-disturbance regrowth, which in turn can potentially be used to map primary (undisturbed) forests, secondary (disturbed/degraded) forests, and forest land converted to oil palm plantation. We applied the Breaks For Additive Season and Trend (BFAST) Monitor framework for continuous change detection; BFAST is a generic and transparent method, which can be used for near-real-time monitoring. To verify our approach, a preliminary spatial accuracy assessment was carried out for disturbance detection using 418 sample pixels interpreted from very high spatial resolution images acquired through Digital Globe viewing service.     Predictors for occupational injuries and diseases among commercial fishers in Finland 1996–2015

    Fishing is a hazardous occupation worldwide. Commercial fishers in Finland are an aging and diminishing population with a high injury rate. Insurance claims data for self-employed Finnish commercial fishers during the years 1996 through 2015 (n = 1951) were analysed to assess predictors for occupational injuries and diseases. Out of the available variables, fishery location, career length, and participation in the voluntary occupational health service programme were not significant predictors. Male gender (OR 2.02; 95% CI 1.37–2.99), Finnish mother tongue vs. Swedish (OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.53–2.55), and higher income levels from fishing (four income categories, OR range: 1.71–3.53) were associated with higher odds for a compensated occupational injury or disease claim among commercial fishers in the final multivariate model. The identified risk groups could be targeted for interventions, and the content of the occupational health service programme should be developed to gain protective effect

    Kinematics of the outer pseudorings and the spiral structure of the Galaxy

    The kinematics of the outer rings and pseudorings is determined by two processes: the resonance tuning and the gas outflow. The resonance kinematics is clearly observed in the pure rings, while the kinematics of the gas outflow is manifested itself in the pseudorings. The direction of systematical motions in the pure rings depends on the position angle of a point with respect to the bar major axis and on the class of the outer ring. The direction of the radial and azimuthal components of the residual velocities of young stars in the Perseus, Carina, and Sagittarius regions can be explained by the presence of the outer pseudoring of class R1R2' in the Galaxy. We present models, which reproduce the directions and values of the residual velocities of OB-associations in the Perseus and Sagittarius regions, and also model reproducing the directions of the residual velocities in the Perseus, Sagittarius, and Carina regions. The kinematics of the Sagittarius region accurately defines the solar position angle with respect to the bar elongation, theta_b=45 (+/-5) deg.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy Letter
